Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Matthew B. Hill for heroism while participating in aerial flight on 10 July 2006, as an Air Mission Commander for the Joint Task Force supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. On this date, Major Hill's actions under direct enemy fire were instrumental in the survival of his flight of three MH47E crews and passengers and the survival of the downed aircrew and ground forces. His actions during the moments preceding and immediately following the shooting down of the aircraft and subsequent actions prior to exfiltration helped set the conditions for the rescue operation of United States forces under fire. Major Hill's distinctive accomplishments are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Joint Task Force, and the United States Army.
