Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Ronald D. Herzog for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Herzog distinguished himself by exceptional valorous actions while serving as Vinh Long sector air observation and reconnaissance pilot (on 7 September 1968). He was called to support a friendly resupply column caught in an enemy ambush, and a district town that was under enemy mortar attack. Upon reaching the area, he assessed the situation and began to make strafing runs on the ambush positions with rockets and machine gun fire. Although receiving intense enemy fire, he continued these runs until he had expended all of his ordnance. He then directed artillery fire onto the enemy positions that were shelling the town. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
