Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Jones G. Herring, United States Marine Corps Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Night Fighter Squadron Five Hundred Forty-One during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Western Caroline Islands Area, from 22 January to 18 February 1945. Completing his twentieth mission during this period, Captain Herring carried out hazardous bombing and strafing attacks against strongly defended hostile positions and contributed materially to the success of his squadron. His courage and devotion to duty in the face of accurate antiaircraft fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

2.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the GOLD STAR in lieu of' a second Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Jones G. Herring, United States Marine Corps Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Night Fighter Squadron Five Hundred Forty-One during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Western Caroline Islands Area, from 21 February to 23 April 1945. Completing his fortieth mission during this period, Captain Herring contributed materially to the success of his squadron and to the infliction of damage on the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty in the face of antiaircraft fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval service.
