Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One Gordon G. Henson for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Henson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as CO-pilot/Gunner of an armed UH-1C helicopter in support of friendly ground forces near Phan Rang during a low-level reconnaissance. A sudden burst of intense hostile fire was directed at the lead gunship. He unleashed a murderous barrage of minigun fire at the well-concealed enemy. As he pressed his attack, so as to enable the lead gunship to break away, his aircraft also came under hostile fire and received several hits. During a subsequent heliborne assault, he maneuvered between the enemy and the assaulting force. He thus diverted hostile fire and allowed the assault force to land without incident. He placed such a devastating barrage of counter fire on the enemy positions that the enemy fled stricken with terror from the area. Under intense hostile fire at an altitude of 100 feet, his accurate return fire killed several more distraught enemies in their tracks. Warrant Officer Henson's awesome performance contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
