CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: UH-1
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Marion W. Harris, Warrant Officer, Company A, 1st Aviation Battalion (WAHBAO), for action dated 25 December 1969 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Warrant Officer Harris was serving as a member of a helicopter team on an emergency extraction of a friendly ground unit that had been subjected to intense hostile fire from an unknown size enemy force. Disregarding his personal safety, Warrant Officer Harris exposed himself to the insurgent barrage of small arms fire to effectively accomplish the mission as the aircraft landed in a small, smoke-covered area under the cover of darkness. His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the success of the operation. Warrant Officer Harris’ actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
