Citation:  1.) The President of the United States under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 2 July 1926, AR 672-5-1 and USARV Reg 672-1 dated 1 July 1969 HARRELL, ARCHIE A., CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER W3, United States Army, 213th Aviation Company (Assault Support Helicopter), is awarded the Distinguishing Flying Cross for actions on 23 February 1969 in the Republic of Vietnam: For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty; Chief Warrant Officer Harrell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the aircraft commander of a CH-47 aircraft which rendered emergency resupply support to three besieged allied elements near Long Binh. He continued the mission even though the gunship escort had not arrived, an enemy 37mm antiaircraft weapon was know to be in the area, and there was no means of radio contact since no one at the drop zone spoke English. Braving intense enemy automatic and small arms fire, he made repeated landings under the most hazardous conditions. His unselfish display of courage and his high regard for the lives of his allied troops contributed immeasurably to the successful defense of Bear Cat and Long Binh. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
