Loren D. Hall
AWARDED DFC:
1
CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: UH-1
Citation: 1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Chief Warrant Officer Hall distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a light-fire team, in support of a long range Special Forces patrol, which was in continuous contact with a superior enemy force. He led his fire team under low clouds to provide gun cover for the insertion of a reaction force to augment the patrol. After the fire team was on station, the lift ships radioed that they would be unable to break through the clouds and fog because of the surrounding mountains. Realizing that his team's fire power was the only hope for the patrol's survival, he voluntarily held his gun team on station under high vulnerability to enemy fire. With fuel low, seventy-five percent of armament expended, and the clouds and fog reducing visibility to one-quarter mile, Warrant Officer Hall was forced to withdraw. His professional skill and determination enabled the LRP team to break contact with the larger enemy force and resulted in two confirmed enemy dead and POW information of twenty enemy wounded. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, this unit, and the United States Army.
