Baird for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 20 October 1972. On that date, Captain Baird successfully directed tactical strike aircraft against three hostile field artillery pieces and numerous anti-aircraft gun positions. In spite of very heavy anti-aircraft fire and very poor light conditions due to impending darkness, Captain Baird's fearless and determined efforts resulted in the destruction of three heavy artillery pieces, several anti-aircraft guns, and a significant reduction in friendly casualties. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed Captain Baird reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
