CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Enduring Freedom
MODEL: MV-22B
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain David W. Haake for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an MV-22B Osprey Pilot, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), 1 Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), on 27 June 2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Captain Haake demonstrated heroism and valor by landing into a high threat zone under heavy enemy fire in order to insert the embarked ground forces required to reinforce a firefight between Alpha Company, 2d Reconnaissance Battalion and the enemy. When notified that an Afghan soldier was seriously injured due to a gunshot wound received in the cabin, he calmly directed his crew to keep the passenger on board for medical evacuation. After debarking the remaining forces and assessing significant battle damage to critical flight control and fuel systems resulting from twelve confirmed medium machine gun hits, Captain Haake departed the landing zone and maneuvered his aircraft, despite the severe control system issues and a massive fuel leak, to a safe landing. Displaying courage, poise, and superb situational awareness despite extreme adversity, his actions resulted in the safe arrival of the aircraft, casualty, and crew to the security of a nearby base. Captain Haake's bold and heroic actions in the face of danger saved the lives of Marines and an Afghan soldier. By his steadfast efforts, superb airmanship, and unexcelled dedication in the face of hazardous flying conditions, Captain Haake reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
