Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Edwin D. Gunter, Jr. for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 20 August 1969. On this date, Lieutenant Gunter flew his aircraft in support of friendly forces to confirm reports of hostile activity in this vital area. In spite of the intensive volleys of anti-aircraft fire and adverse weather condition, he spotted the hostiles camouflaged activity in a dense foliage area. He marked the target with precise accuracy and directed in tactical air which later reports confirmed that great losses were inflicted and the hostile force was routed. Through his personal bravery and energetic application of his knowledge and skill he significantly furthered the goal of the United States in Southeast Asia. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Gunter reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Gunter, Jr. for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a T-28 Aircraft Commander over Southeast Asia on 22 August 1969. On this date, Lieutenant Gunter participated in a photographic reconnaissance team mission in an unarmed aircraft over highly restricted and hazardous territory. In spite of intense hostile anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Gunter, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, remained in the area to satisfactorily accomplish this mission. Through his personal bravery and energetic application of his knowledge and skill, he significantly furthered the goal of the United States in Southeast Asia. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Gunter reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

3.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Edwin D. Gunter, Jr., for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia from 3 September 1969 to 4 September 1969. Lieutenant Gunter, flying under adverse conditions, over extremely hazardous terrain through sustained anti-aircraft and small arms fire, maintained his unarmed aircraft in the area to direct allied tactical air support against dangerous hostile forces positions and targets. His outstanding airmanship and courage in the face of danger aided United States efforts in combating aggression in Southeast Asia. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Gunter reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
