Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Hugh T. Gunn for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as C-7A aircraft commander in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 and 5 May 1967. On these dates, Captain Gunn flew a night Tactical Emergency support mission, airlifting combat troops and ammunition, under extremely adverse weather conditions complicated by thunderstorms, into a marginal airstrip poorly illuminated by flare pots and encompassed by hostile ground fire. Captain Gunn safely completed five sorties moving 132 combat troops and 3,600 pounds of ammunition in support of a blocking action against a regiment of unfriendly forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Gunn reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
