CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Robert M. Greene for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-100 Pilot near Tam KY, Republic of Vietnam on 1 October 1967. On that date, Major Greene was the leader of a flight of three F-100's diverted from their pre-briefed target in response to a request for immediate close air support by elements of the 101st Airborne Division. The friendly troops were pinned down in a valley by intense hostile automatic weapons fire, including .50 caliber machine guns, by an unknown number of Viet Cong on the side of a nearby hill. In mountainous terrain beneath a 1500-foot ragged, overcast ceiling, Major Greene, with complete disregard for his own safety, accomplished repeated accurate low altitude ordnance deliveries through heavy hostile automatic weapons fire. His outstanding courage, aggressive determination, and unerring accuracy were directly responsible for the successful defense of the friendly position and saved many American lives. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Greene reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
