Frye, CPT, United States Army, 1981 Co A, 159th Avn Bn (Aslt Spt Hel) (Ambl), Republic of Vietnam, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 25 September 1970. Captain Frye distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a CH-47 helicopter during the extraction of four downed helicopters north of Fire Support Base Fuller, Republic of Vietnam. Despite receiving intense hostile fire during his initial entry, Captain Frye continued onto the pick-up zone and successfully extracted one of the downed aircraft. During his second recovery, he again came under an intense barrage but skillfully maneuvered his aircraft and recovered another helicopter. On the third entry, Captain Frye located and silenced two enemy positions and extracted a third helicopter. Finally, deciding to attempt the final extraction despite the precarious situation, Captain Frye entered the pick-up zone and completed the mission. As a result of his actions, over one million dollars worth of equipment was successfully extracted. Captain Frye's personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
