Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert L. Gray for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Combat Fighter Pilot , 308th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam on 10 April 1966. On that date, Captain Gray led a scramble flight from the Bien Hoa alert pad. The fort at Xom Da Bien had come under heavy mortar and automatic weapons attack. As the initial passes were made over the target the hostile forces opened up with intense small arms, automatic weapons, and a .50 caliber fire against the attacking aircraft. Captain Gray made a total of ten passes, many of them extremely vulnerable low-level runs, thereby exposing himself repeatedly to the intense ground fire. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Gray reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
