Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Thomas C. Freund for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Aircraft Commander in Southeast Asia on 10 October 1970. On that date, Major Freund led an air strike against a hostile position consisting of storage facilities and fortified positions. In spite of heavy ground fire, hazardous terrain, and limited visibility, Major Freund delivered his ordnance with accuracy and effectiveness. Because of his determined efforts, the hostile forces in the area suffered a significant loss of vital equipment, supplies, and operational facilities. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Freund reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
