Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class Kenneth D. Freid for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving in Composite Squadron Ninety One, attached to the U.S.S Makin Island, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Ryukyu Islands Area, from March 26 through May 31, 1945. Completing his twentieth mission during this period, Freid contributed materially to the success of his squadron. His gallant devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of United States Naval Service.
