AWARDED DFC:
1
CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: C-130B
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Michael J. Grassinger for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-130B Co-Pilot at Khe Sanh Airfield, Republic of Vietnam, on 31 March 1971. On that date, Lieutenant Grassinger flew a combat-essential mission through an area marked by air strikes, severe weather conditions, and the constant threat of hostile ground fire. After breaking out of a low ceiling on final approach, Lieutenant Grassinger had to direct the Pilot through a friendly air strike so the badly-needed cargo could be offloaded. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Grassinger reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
