Citation: 1.) The DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS is awarded by direction of the President, under the provisions of Army Regulation 600-45 as amended, and pursuant to authority vested in me by the Commanding General, Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Citation For extraordinary aohiovment while participating in aerial f1ight as navigator of a Bl7 type aircraft. on 12 September 1943, Lieutenant Freas flew in an attack upon an enemy airdrome at Frosinone, Italy. Upon the approach to the target, intense antiaircraft fire enveloped the formation heavily damaging the lead plane and forcing the pilot to turn from the bomb run. Displaying superior professional skill and resourcefulness as his pilot maneuvered his aircraft into the lead position. Lieutenant Freas quickly guided the bombers back on course. Then aiding his bombardier in setting course for the run over the objectives Lieutenant Freas enabled the B-l7's to cover the target area with a devastating bomb pattern. His outstanding proficiency in combat and steadfast devotion to duty have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
