Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Cecil R. Gleason for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Gleason distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of an O-1G aircraft in support of friendly infantry forces near Quang Ngai. A friendly patrol was helplessly pinned down by an enemy force of unknown size and was in dire need of assistance. Realizing the urgency of the situation, Captain Gleason immediately called for and directed helicopter gunships and tactical jet fighters against the enemy. Disregarding his own safety, he flew through withering machine gun fire in order to accurately mark the enemy positions. Through his courage and sound judgment, he contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
