Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer William C. Gilmore for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Gilmore distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of a UH-1H helicopter, performing combat assaults near Vinh Long. On a tactical emergency extension to rescue crew members of a downed helicopter, he made eleven insertions into a well manned and fortified enemy complex. His ship received small arms fire and .50 and .30 caliber anti-aircraft fire. His courage in making the repeated insertions into the hostile landing zone was instrumental in saving the crew and destroying the enemy stronghold. His actions were in in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
