Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Roy M. Giles, Jr., for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-7A Squadron Instructor Pilot Advisor at Mang Buk Air Base on 1 April 1972. On that date, an engine running offload operation was suddenly interrupted by a heavy barrage of incoming mortar fire. Recognizing the potential hazard caused by the presence of his aircraft to the local villagers and the group of about 110 people that massed near the back of his airplane, Major Giles ordered his crew to expeditiously offload the vital rations and ammunition. Even though many people forced their way onto his aircraft, causing a severely overgrossed condition, Major Giles alertly managed to safely evacuate his aircraft, undamaged, and also successfully deliver essential supplies to this forward base while under an intense attack, thus greatly aiding in the defense of this austere outpost, a vital defensive position during the spring offensive of 1972. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Giles reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
