Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Harold W. Gilbert for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight. During the period June 1944 to 20 November 1944, he participated in 200 or more hours of combat flight in heavy bombardment type aircraft operating from bases in China and India. These men struck enemy personnel and material concentrations and ocean-going vessels throughout China and Burma and over the China Seas. In spite of exposure to fire from enemy ground guns and hostile aircraft, they inflicted severe damage wherever they went. They often flew in dangerous weather, over poorly-charted, mountainous terrain and over the sea with minimum navigational aids. The skill and fortitude demonstrated by these officers and enlisted men reflect high credit upon their personal records and are in keeping with the fine traditions of the Army Air Forces.
