Gicking, United States Army, Chief Warrant Officer CW2, 195th Asst Hel Co, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 11 May 1968 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Chief Warrant Officer Gicking distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1H helicopter on a combat operation in deteriorating weather when an infantry company was besieged and in dire need of emergency resupply. Three consecutive times he maneuvered his aircraft into and out of the landing zone under intense mortar and automatic weapons fire. Once again, he took his aircraft into the area to evacuate two wounded and automatic weapons fire and mortars focused on his aircraft. Nevertheless, he successfully performed the mission while resplendently displaying courage, poise, and inimitable aerial acumen. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
