Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Roy R. M. Gibson for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron One, attached to the U.S.S. Yorktown, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of the Bonin Islands on July 4, 1944. In the face of continuous heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Gibson led a flight of torpedo planes against hostile shipping, which succeeded in hitting and damaging three cargo vessels. In addition he personally damaged a medium sized cargo vessel. His skill and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
