Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Robert J. Gibson for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, First Lieutenant Gibson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of a scout helicopter conducting a visual reconnaissance near Oasis Fire Base. When the lead ship spotted ten enemy along a trail, First Lieutenant Gibson maneuvered into the enemy’s field of fire to deliver effective suppressive fire on the enemy, enabling the lead ship to reach safety. After the gun ships expended their ordnance, the scout team re-entered the area for a battle damage assessment. Receiving enemy fire, First Lieutenant Gibson engaged the enemy, taking numerous hits. The observer was killed in an attempt to pinpoint the enemy positions. He flew the crippled ship 45 kilometers to medical facilities. Through his courage and exceptional flying ability, he was able to protect his lead ship and land his disabled aircraft without further damage. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
