Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer 2 Ricky L. Gerontis for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 30 October 1969. Chief Warrant Officer Gerontis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot in Command of a transport helicopter near Bu Prang. He monitored a call requesting assistance in extracting the crew of a helicopter gunship who had perished when their aircraft was downed by heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire. Upon arrival at the crash site, he found that heavy jungle surrounded the crash site and, a strong enemy force was in the area. Well within range of hostile fire, he brought his aircraft to a hover and lowered his cargo line to the ground troops. Despite fire directed at his aircraft, Chief Warrant Officer Gerontis remained at a stabilized hover, at the same time directing his Door Gunner's suppressive fire on suspected enemy positions. His strong devotion to his fellow soldiers resulted in the successful completion of a most-trying mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
