CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: UH1
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Daniel C. Geertson for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 3 February 1970. On that date, Sergeant Geertson was serving as an Aerial Observer with a helicopter on a visual reconnaissance operation near Tan Yuen. While flying over the treacherous region, Sergeant Geertson observed an undetermined size enemy element and immediately marked the insurgent emplacements with smoke. Acting with tactical deliberation, Sergeant Geertson placed devastating suppressive fire on the aggressors. Although subjected to intense hostile fire, Sergeant Geertson disregarded his personal safety as he placed effective fire on the enemy positions. When other friendly aircraft arrived, Sergeant Geertson continued to ignore the possible danger as he, again, marked the aggressors with smoke. His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the successful outcome of the encounter. Sergeant Geertson's actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
