Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Jon L. Engle for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an OA-10 single-ship airborne forward air control in the Kuwait theater of operations, Operation Desert Storm, on 31 January 1991. On that day, Captain Engle was diverted to support a group of United States Marines under fire near the town of Khafji. Captain Engle located and directed air strikes on a large formation of armor and artillery believed to be reinforcing the enemy’s main force. Captain Engle directed no less than twelve sets of fighters and, despite heavy antiaircraft artillery, made repeated rocked attacks on enemy positions until forced to leave due to fuel. While departing the battle, Captain Engle continued to provide observation and uncovered a major attempt by the Iraqi’s to hide tanks by burying them up to their turrets in the sand. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Engle reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
