Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to James F. Ellis, Second Lieutenant, Armor, United States Army, Troop A, 1st Squadron (Airmobile), 9th Air Cavalry, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Second Lieutenant Ellis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 4 December 1969, while serving as aircraft commander during a reconnaissance mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When he received intense enemy fire, Second Lieutenant Ellis rolled in, placing suppressive fire into the area and covering his scout. Although his turret system broke down on his first pass leaving him with only rockets, he again rolled in even though receiving anti-aircraft fire. Accurately engaging the hostiles, he silenced the enemy position. He repeatedly rolled in on the enemy in an effort to block their retreat as he directed artillery and an airstrike on their position. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
