Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Garrett N. Athanacio, WO1, United States Army, Co D, 227th Avn Bn (Aslt Hel), 1st Cav Div (Ambl), Republic of Vietnam for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in Laos. Warrant Officer Athanacio distinguished himself on 6 March 1971 while serving as aircraft commander of an AH-1G armed helicopter in support of Army of the Republic of Vietnam troops near Fire Base Delta, Laos. On a mission to provide cover fire for medical evacuation aircraft, Warrant Officer Athanacio made a low-level pass over an area of heavy enemy contact and located the landing zone for the rescue aircraft. He immediately placed an intense volume of suppressive fire on enemy positions in the vicinity of the beleaguered landing zone, thereby enabling the rescue helicopter to safely complete the mission. His actions contributed greatly to the success of the medical evacuation. Warrant Officer Athanacio’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
