CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: WWII
MODEL: B-29
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Daniel F. Depert for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on a mission against the important war plant, the Kure naval arsenal, at Kure, Japan, on 22 June 1945. These individuals were combat crew members of a B-29 aircraft based in the Marianas Islands which dropped bombs with devastating accuracy from medium altitude while under intense and accurate heavy anti-aircraft fire from Japanese naval vessels and land-based batteries. Despite the enemy opposition encountered and the damage sustained by this plane from flak, they coordinated their work in such a superior manner that the squadron was able to place a maximum number of bombs on the target. The determination of the members of this crew to drop their bombs on the primary objective resulted in successful accomplishment of this mission. The exemplary coolness under attack and superior professional skill of these veterans of twenty-one combat sorties reflect the highest credit on themselves and the Army Air Forces.
