Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer John W. Dean for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Dean distinguished himself while serving as Aircraft Commander of a UH-1H helicopter in support of friendly forces engaged in active combat with a well-entrenched enemy force near Tan Uyen, Republic of Vietnam. He had just completed a hazardous ammunitions resupply mission when he received a radio transmission stating that a medical evacuation was urgently needed. Realizing the urgency of the mission, he immediately volunteered. Under heavy fire, he picked up the wounded soldiers and flew them to a nearby evacuation hospital. Upon returning to the combat area, it was found that an ammunition resupply was needed. He extracted 14 wounded personnel, while flying the numerous resupply missions to the troops. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
