2.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Patrick F. Daly for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a B-52G Aircraft Commander near Hanoi, North Vietnam on 20 December 1972. On that date, Captain Daly was tasked with the responsibility of commanding a B-52 crew involved in one of the most massive conventional bombing raids in the recent history of aerial warfare. While attacking the target, Captain Daly's aircraft came under heavy and intense fire from surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery and airborne interceptors. Despite the opposing fire, which presented the greatest of personal dangers, Captain Daly showed complete disregard for his personal safety and continued the attack. Through Captain Daly's heroic actions and professional skill, the assigned target was destroyed and his aircraft and crew returned safely. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Daly reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
