CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: -
MODEL: B-24
Citation: 1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight over Kamiri airdrome, Noemfoor Island, on 23 April 1944. These officers and enlisted men comprised the crew of one of five B-24's dispatched on a long-range strike against this Japanese airdrome. During the bombing run, the formation was intercepted by twenty hostile fighters, and an intense engagement ensued for approximately forty-five minutes. This aircraft had one engine destroyed and sustained other major damage, causing it to become the target of repeated close range attacks. Despite three of the crew members being wounded, the gunners sent four enemy planes, completely enveloped in flames, spinning into the sea. By the closest cooperation between all members of the formation, the hostile attacks were warded off, and the damaged bomber was maintained in flight through the long journey to the base. This example of outstanding courage and devotion to duty is worthy of the highest commendation
