CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: UH-1H
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Richard E. Crosley, Warrant Officer WO-1, United States Army, Company B, 227th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter) for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Crosley distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 19 April 1968, while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1H helicopter during a combat assault mission in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. Although adverse weather conditions prevailed and numerous enemy anti-aircraft positions had been recorded in the area, Warrant Officer Crosley volunteered to undertake the hazardous mission. Upon approaching and departing the embattled landing zone, Warrant Officer Crosley received heavy enemy ground fire. Although numerous aircraft were shot down, and many more had taken hits, Warrant Officer Crosley safely completed six additional lifts of troops and supplies into the valley throughout the day. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
