Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Crawley distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 July 1971, while serving as Aircraft Commander with F Troop, 8th Cavalry. On that date, his aircraft was involved in the recovery of a light observation helicopter and its crew, which had been shot down by intense enemy fire. Realizing the dangers inherent in such an operation and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Captain Crawley skillfully maneuvered his craft toward the wreckage. Despite the intensity of the hostile fire, Captain Crawley calmly and efficiently managed his aircraft, making the extraction. His courageous actions and expert flying ability undoubtedly saved the lives of the crew members and made the mission a complete success. Captain Crawley's personal heroism, professional competence and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 23rd Infantry Division, and the United States Army. Richard A. Crawley is a member of The Distinguished Flying Cross Society.
