CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: B-52D
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Max G. Corder for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-52D Aircraft Commander on an extremely hazardous mission directed against targets in Hanoi, Peoples’ Republic of North Vietnam, on 27 December 1972. Moments prior to the weapons release, the wave lead aircraft was shot down by a hostile surface-to-air missile. Captain Corder, as Aircraft Commander of the second aircraft in the wave, immediately assumed command of the remaining eight aircraft and let the formation to target, despite increasing numbers of hostile surface-to-air missile launches. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Corder reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
