Citation: 1.) The President of the United States is pleased to present the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Daniel C. Corby for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Corby distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot of an armed helicopter engaged in an airmobile operations fifteen miles southwest of Rach Soi. Under instructions to make a reconnaissance, he descended over a heavily wooded area on the edge of the U Minh Forest. Almost immediately his helicopter came under intense automatic weapons fire. Disregarding the enemy rounds tearing into his aircraft, he continued to point out the numerous enemy positions for his aircraft commander who was firing rocket after rocket into the enemy. Even though the aircraft had taken several damaging hits, he elected to remain on-station to cover the advance of the ground troops. During a reconnaissance for the friendly forces, his aircraft was hit again by a burst of enemy automatic fire killing the aircraft commander instantly. Warrant Officer Corby immediately grabbed the controls of the aircraft and brought it to a level altitude just seconds before it would have gone inverted, saving his aircraft and the lives of his crew. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
