Michael A. Conway
AWARDED DFC:
1
CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: VIetnam
MODEL: UH-1H
Citation: 1.) The patrol had been taken under fire by an enemy ambush, resulting in one U.S. soldier being mortally wounded and three others injured. The patrol was dispersed and became surrounded by an estimated platoon-sized enemy force. Lieutenant Conway was enroute to the patrol's location when the ambush took place. He joined five other aircraft and picked up a reaction force. Despite the enemy fire in the one ship-landing zone, he flew into the area so that the reaction force could secure the friendly casualties. During the ensuing firefight, he flew to another position where the dispersed patrol's wounded radio operator was located. He attempted to land but had to abort due to the high surrounding grass. He finally came to a hover about 10 feel off the ground, while his crew chief lowered himself by rope and secured the wounded man. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
