Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Jared R. Combs, Warrant Officer, W1, USA, 173rd Aslt Hel Co, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 14 June 1967 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Combs distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1D helicopter during a mission to extract casualties from an unsecure area near Phouc Vinh, Republic of Vietnam. He flew his aircraft through dense smoke and landed in the pick up zone while the perimeter was under attack by a large enemy force. After loading the wounded aboard he flew his heavy laden aircraft out of the clearing to the nearest medical facility. During both landing and take off from the pick up zone he was the subject of intense automatic weapons fire. He made three trips into the landing zone and extracted all the casualties. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
