Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant George P. Cole, Jr. for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an AC-47 Pilot near Quang Tri, Republic of Vietnam, on 2 October 1969. On that night, Lieutenant Cole was highly instrumental in the successful defense of a friendly outpost under attack by a numerically superior hostile force. Despite hazardous weather conditions and visible hostile ground fire, he broke the attack and provided cover for a medical evacuation helicopter. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Cole reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
