Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Elmer D. Christensen for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the European Theater of Operations on 21 September 1944. Lieutenant Christensen demonstrated indomitable courage while participating in a Squadron mission over German territory. While preparing to return to the base the Squadron was attacked by sixteen hostile aircraft and Lieutenant Christensen, displaying great aggressiveness, attacked and pursued an enemy plane at low altitude, finally forcing it to crash to the ground. The conspicuous aerial skill and fortitude with which Lieutenant Christensen attacked and destroyed the enemy on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
