Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Joseph L. Chizmadia for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Weapon Systems Officer in Southeast Asia on 18 December 1971. On that date, Captain Chizmadia was leading an air strike against a hostile position consisting of a heavily defended storage area. In spite of heavy ground fire, marginal weather, and extremely hazardous terrain, Captain Chizmadia delivered his ordnance with precise accuracy and effectiveness, thus neutralizing a high threat area and denying the hostile forces vital equipment and supplies. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Chizmadia reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
