Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer John E. Cattilini for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commanders of helicopters in a light fire team of gunships. While flying night security for Vinh Long Army Airfield they were called to aid a nearby compound under heavy attack. Knowing that time was of the essence in such a mission, they pushed their aircraft to their limits to reach the besieged compound before it was overrun. When they reached the compound the enemy forces were within one hundred meters of the compound and were placing intense fire on its defenders. They immediately began placing extremely accurate and devastating rocket fire on the advancing troops. Unable to withstand the onslaught of their deadly rocket fire, the enemy forces forward progress was halted, and they attempted to flee the area. Their professional flying ability, expert marksmanship, and calmness under fire proved instrumental in providing the essential element of a successful mission. Their exceptionally valorous actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit and the United States Army.
