Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Raymond G. Caryl, Captain, Infantry, United States Army, 220th Recon Apln Co, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 10 May 1968 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Captain Caryl distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a pilot of an O-1 light observation aircraft during a mission to extract a long range reconnaissance patrol that had been surrounded by an enemy force near the demilitarized zone. While awaiting arrival of requested air support, Captain Caryl made repeated low passes over the enemy positions, drawing the intense enemy fire away from the patrol. He expertly controlled jet attack aircraft during darkness, placing napalm dangerously close to the friend positions. Through Captain Caryl’s exceptional heroism and professionalism, the long range reconnaissance patrol was successfully extracted from the enemy infested area. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
