Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Jon L. Carrico for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Carrico distinguished himself by valorous actions while flying as Pilot on a UH-1D helicopter smoke ship. In order to ensnare the enemy, four lifts of infantry troops were inserted into a blocking position. To insure their safe landing, Warrant Officer Carrico flew his aircraft repeatedly between the enemy's heavy automatic weapons fire and the landing zone, laying a protective layer of smoke for the vulnerable lift ships. He boldly repeated this obscurative action for four lifts, sustaining hits on each low level pass. Suddenly, the Aircraft Commander was seriously wounded, causing the aircraft to temporarily go out of control. Responding with astonishing speed, Warrant Officer Carrico gained control of the aircraft and flew with utmost speed to the nearest hospital facilities. His fearless resolution and dynamic perspicacity in the form of horrendous contingencies saved a man's life and also contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military services and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
