CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam
MODEL:  OH-13

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Luis Carreras, Warrant Officer W-1, United States Army Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 3d Brigade, for extraordinary heroism while participating in aerial flight. Warrant Officer Carreras distinguished himself by heroism in action on 2 April 1967, while serving as pilot of an OH-13 scout helicopter during a combat support mission near Bong Son, Republic of Vietnam. When a rifle company became pinned down by intense enemy fire from well concealed positions on the side of a steep hill, a wounded soldier fell in an area covered by the enemy fire. Without regard for his own safety, Warrant Officer Carreras maneuvered through the intense hostile fire and made several firing passes on the enemy positions. The ground element was then able to evacuate the wounded soldier and mount an assault on the enemy force. Warrant Officer Carreras' outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
